Congratulations to the campbell family
on receiving the
ohio conservation farm family award
Mahoning County farmer extraordinaire, Harold Campbell, has been recognized by Ohio Farmer Magazine for his hard work and passion, and selected as a recipient of the Ohio Conservation Farm Family Award. The Campbell family has been featured in the September issue of Ohio Farmer and was recognized at the Ohio Farm Science Review September 19.
We are grateful for Campbell’s dedication to Mahoning SWCD. Campbell has been working with our office for 35 years, and for the last 6 years he has been sharing his wisdom as a Supervisor on our board. Mahoning SWCD couldn’t be more happy for the Campbell family on their award.
Campbell and his son Ben operate the Campbell’s Stone Creek Farm in Diamond Township, consisting of 400 acres of pasture, as well as 175 acres of hay, 40 acres of oats, and raise a herd of 100 cow/calf pairs.
However, Campbell’s conscientious farming techniques and extensive work within his community far exceed the size of his farm. The Campbell farm works hard to keep their farming footprint to a minimum.
From practicing a multitude of Best Management Practices such as maintaining 12 acres of sod waterways, tile drains, livestock watering facilities, green strips, and 2 miles of fenced off creeks. As soon as the Cammpbells took ownership of the farm they planted 4,000 trees to reduce creek bank erosion and create an improved ecosystem for wildlife. Today, they continue to find ways to protect soil and water resources. 10 acres of turnip/oats cover crop, 20 acres of contour strips and 2 acres of wetlands are all in place to help maintain topsoil quality as well as preserve water quality.
All 640 acres of Campbell’s Stone Creek Farms serve as an example of great farming management, and Campbell is working hard to share his aquired knowledge.
Campbell taught vocational agriculture for 35 years before becoming a full time farmer. Now, Campbell hosts events on his farm for Future Farmers of American, Eastern Ohio Grazing Council, 4-H, and Cattleman’s Association.
Pasture Walk: Come to the Pasture Walk on September 26th to learn about BMP’s at Campbell’s Stone Creek Farms. The walk will start promptly at 7 p.m. at the farm, 16200 Palmyra Rd, Diamond OH, 44412. Call our office for more details and to register for the walk.
